The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and Happy Nyilo. May the new year bring peace, prosperity and good health for all.
Nyilo is also an auspicious day celebrated as a New Year in Bhutan. Nyilo, a day coinciding with the βWinter Solsticeβ, is an auspicious day celebrated as a New Year in Bhutan. Nyilo literally means ‘the return of the sun’. It is the day from which the duration of sunlight time increases, signifying the start of longer days.
An age-old tradition of Lolay is also celebrated by children on the eve of Nyilo. They would visit homes in their village singing βLolayβ β verses of good wishes and in return they would be gifted with rice, meat and money which they would then use to cook and enjoy at a picnic, next day.
