30th June: The National Livestock Research Centre (NLRC), Bumthang under the Department of Livestock conducted two days of “Training Workshop on Flow Hive Technology for Enhanced Honey Production” for beekeeping farmers and livestock officials under Bumthang Dzongkhag from 29th to 30th June 2023. The training was conducted with the main objectives to demonstrate flow hive technology and encourage its adoption in Bhutan.
Flow hive technology was first launched in 2015 and is rapidly gaining popularity among hobby beekeepers and economically well-to-do classes of people. It is a novel technology to enhance clean honey production because of its faster, more efficient, and less intrusive innovation and by-passes smoking, removal of frames, and honey extraction. The technology significantly minimizes bee mortality during the extraction process, beekeeping drudgery, and resources despite the initial high cost of hives.
The training was attended by 21 beekeeping entrepreneurs and 23 livestock officials under Bumthang Dzongkhag and was graced by Dasho Dzongda. It is the first attempt by NLRC to introduce the flow hive technology at the farmers’ field in Bhutan, wherein about 225 flow hives will be procured and supplied during July 2023.
The training and the project for flow hive technology are funded by the Japanese Supplementary Budget-UNDP Project-IV amounting to USD 1,47,007.
