WTO Accession Director called on Hon’ble Agriculture Minister

13 July, Thimphu: Ms. Maika Oshikawa, Director, Accession Division from the World Trade Organization (WTO) called on Hon’ble Minister, Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The meeting addressed concerns and explored opportunities regarding Bhutan’s WTO accession negotiation areas in agriculture.

During the meeting, the Hon’ble Minister highlighted various issues and requirements of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The need for technical support in the areas of infrastructure development and capacity building was emphasized. In particular, the Ministry aimed to enhance the quality and standard of production for selected priority crops. The Hon’ble Minister also stated the significance of capacity development for the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority to ensure quality testing and certification processes.

Ms. Maika Oshikawa assured the Ministry that the WTO would provide comprehensive documentation outlining the accession process. Furthermore, she said that the WTO would conduct detailed workshops to inform Bhutan about it. She also stated that the Ministry will be provided an opportunity to present its needs and requirements, ensuring that Bhutan’s concerns are adequately addressed.

The meeting between the WTO delegation, led by Ms. Maika Oshikawa, and the Hon’ble Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock concluded on a positive note. The discussions focused on building a strong foundation for Bhutan’s WTO accession, ensuring that the country can fully benefit from its participation while preserving its unique socio-economic and cultural values.

As Bhutan progresses towards becoming a WTO member, this collaboration will foster sustainable economic growth, expand trade opportunities, and promote inclusive development in the country.
