22 July 2023: The Highland shop, a pioneering one-stop model was inaugurated in Chamkhar, Bumthang on 22 July 2023. The Highland shop aims to create a favorable environment for the highland communities of Choekhor gewog to aggregate and market highland products – butter, chugo (hard cheese) and different fibre products including the finest yak fibre.
It will also serve as a centralized platform for the highlanders to showcase and sell their exceptional offerings, streamlines the marketing process, which ultimately will help alleviate logistical challenges and reduce transaction costs for both producers and consumers. The shop will be operated by the yak cooperatives of Bumthang, “the Bumthang Lanor Namley Tshogde”.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the local government, and the Department of Livestock spearheaded by the National Highland Development Centre (NHDC).
The yak herders, Local Government officials – Dzongkhag Thrizin, Gewog Livestock Extension Officer, and officials from the Department of Livestock, National Highland Development Centre, Wangdue and National Livestock Research Centre (NLRC), Jakar led by the Chief of Livestock Research and Extension Division, DoL attended the event. Ms. Nancy Johnston, FAO consultant, who is currently in the country, also attended the event.
