18-20 July, Sarpang: The Hon’ble Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock recently concluded a successful two-day visit to Sarpang Dzongkhag, witnessing significant strides in livestock and animal health initiatives. The visit aimed to assess and support ongoing efforts in containing the recent Rabies outbreak and addressing other critical challenges faced by the region’s livestock sector.
On Day one of the visit, the Secretary and a team from the Department of Livestock visited Sturgeon Farm in Harachu, where they inspected the ongoing water piping works undertaken by Desuung and the technical staff of NRDCRLF, Haa. The team lauded the progress made in constructing water source facilities, which are vital for enhancing agricultural and livestock practices in the region.
Later in the day, the Secretary and the team held a meeting at Dekiling Gewog Centre with the technical staff involved in containing Rabies outbreak. The outbreak, which surfaced in Tareythang Gewog in late June, posed significant challenges for the region. However, under the leadership of Dr. Lungten, Regional Veterinary Officer, and in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Health, Desuung, Dzongkhag Livestock Sector, and Local Government, remarkable efforts have been made to contain the disease.
The campaign involved extensive activities, such as sample collection, mass vaccination of dogs and cats, and widespread public awareness campaigns across all Gewogs in Sarpang.
The Rabies outbreak was not the only challenge faced by the region, as African Swine Fever (ASF) in pigs and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle also emerged in the past six months. During the meeting, the Secretary engaged in constructive discussions with the technical members involved in the campaign, recognizing their efforts and expressing gratitude for their dedication and perseverance.
On Day two, the Secretary and the team continued their visit to Tareythang Gewog, where they visited the Tashithang Integrated Livestock Farm, managed by Ms. Tshering Dema. The farm showcased impressive ventures in pig fattening, layer farming, and fishery, with upcoming plans for crawfish cultivation, highlighting the potential for diversified livestock development in the region.
The Secretary’s visit also extended to vital livestock facilities in Gelephu, including the Regional Veterinary Hospital & Epidemiology Centre, National Piggery Development Centre, National Development Centre for Aquaculture and National Poultry Development Centre. Engaging in meaningful discussions with the technical staff, the Secretary addressed crucial issues and challenges while acknowledging the progress made and initiating collaborative strategies for the future.
In conclusion, during the return journey to Thimphu, the Secretary visited the Integrated Cold Store (ICS) in Jigmeling, operated by FCBL, promoting efficient storage solutions for meat, vegetables, fruits, and dairy products.
The Hon’ble Secretary expressed satisfaction with the progress and dedication witnessed during the visit and reiterated the government’s commitment to further strengthening the livestock and animal health centres in Sarpang Dzongkhag.
