The Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture and Livestock attended the 7th Royal Highland Festival, held from 23rd to 24th October 2024 in Laya, Gasa Dzongkhag. The annual event, initiated by His Majesty the King in 2016, showcases Bhutanβs highland heritage and fosters the sustainable development of highland communities.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock plays a key role as a collaborating agency for the festival.
The Department of Livestock exhibited various highland products, including yak dairy, textiles made from yak and sheep wool, and honey. In addition, 12 highland cooperatives from 10 Dzongkhags exhibited their diverse products.
A notable highlight was the display of premium yak textiles by 7Weaves, an Assam-based company that collaborates with highland communities, supported by the Department of Livestock and the Youth Development Fund.
The Department of Agriculture also demonstrated low-cost agricultural technologies tailored for highland communities, aimed at boosting the productivity of local commoditiesβa priority under the 13th Five-Year Plan. Alongside these innovations, a variety of improved food products, including avocados, pecan nuts, black garlic, and rice varieties, were displayed for educational purposes.
During the festival, the Hon’ble Minister engaged with local government officials and the ministryβs staff involved in the exhibits, expressing gratitude for their hard work and dedication. The Minister particularly commended those serving in highland communities, acknowledging the challenges posed by the remote locations and harsh climatic conditions.
