𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐧!

11 March,2025:The National Biodiversity Centre (NBC) is pleased to announce the discovery of a new orchid species, 𝒁𝒆𝒖𝒙𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒅𝒓𝒖𝒌𝒚𝒖𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒔, from the warm broadleaved forests of western Bhutan. This discovery brings Bhutan’s total recorded orchid species to 499, further highlighting the country’s rich floral diversity.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬:

* Scientific Name: 𝑍𝑒𝑢𝑥𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑑𝑟𝑢𝑘𝑦𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠

* Habitat: Leaf litter of warm broadleaved forests (approx. 1350m elevation)

* Height: 10–30 cm

* Similar Species: 𝑍𝑒𝑢𝑥𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑜𝑠𝑎 and 𝑍𝑒𝑢𝑥𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑓𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑎

* Conservation Status: Data Deficient (IUCN) – Further research is needed to assess its distribution and threats

This significant discovery was made by Phub Gyeltshen and his team, further reinforcing the importance of Bhutan’s unique biodiversity. The species name 𝑑𝑟𝑢𝑘𝑦𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠 pays tribute to Bhutan, known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon (𝐷𝑟𝑢𝑘𝑦𝑢𝑙).
