Feed analysis is the important laboratory analytical tool to test and maintain feed quality for economic livestock production. The quantity and type of concentrate required in a ration depends upon the nutrient composition of the forage and particular feed ingredient. The only way to accurately determine the nutrient composition in the forage and feed ingredient is through sampling and testing. Feed analysis provides good information about forage and feed quality. Recently, a week-long advance training scheduled from 31st July to 6th August 2022 on quantitative analysis of Aflatoxin and essential amino acids using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was concluded with an awarding of certificate to participants at National Research Development Center for Animal Nutrition, Bumthang. During the training, the participants learned sample preparation, processing techniques, testing and installation and operation of advance analytical equipment HPLC. The training was facilitated by two experts from Nepal through FAO office and equipment supplier SHIMADZU (Japanese company). Till date, the center has been sending feed samples for advance test including essential amino acids to outside country as and when required. The cost incurred for availing advance laboratory service from outside was high. However, with the completion of training and installation of HPLC facility at Animal Nutrition Lab, the center is expected to conduct test for these important parameters and render critical feed analytical service in respect of animal nutrition in the country. The procurement of this advance laboratory equipment was supported by Department of Livestock through FAO-TCP project.
