Towards sustainable and resilient agriculture in Bhutan

5 May, Thimphu: The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and European Union (EU) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Royal Government of Bhutan, launched a project “Enhancing Sustainable Agriculture through Private Sector Participation in Bhutan” on 5th May 2023. A simpler yet significant project launch was graced by the Hon’ble Secretary, MoAL. Highlighting the timeliness of this project, the Hon’ble Secretary mentioned about the relevance and importance of such project when the country is undergoing major economic transformation specifically in the agricultural sector.

During the event, a brief presentation on the program was made by the IFC’s Agribusiness Advisory Team composed of Mr. Harsh Vivek, Program Lead – South Asia Agribusiness Advisory, and Ms. Akira Dhakhwa, Agribusiness Specialist. The EU delegation comprising of Mr. Mario Ronconi, Head of Unit, DG International Partnerships and Mr. Franck Viault, Head of Cooperation, highlighted this initiative’s role in both job creation and food security in Bhutan and the importance of private sector as the engine of growth. The EU delegation complemented the RGOB for the leadership and cooperation in promoting this initiative.

The agribusiness advisory project aims to enhance high-value agriculture and promote private sector participation for sustainable agriculture. Capacity building and smallholder farmer training shall seal the efforts towards an inclusive agribusiness.
